May 2, 2021: Peaceful Protest

Hashtags:

  • The hashtags are put on every post in order to reach out to more people. On both Instagram and Facebook, posts are shown to you based on what you had showed interest in recently. Hashtags are a way that the platforms can categorize what topic your post is in and show that post to people who are interested in whatever your hashtags are. I use the organization’s name, Nukenergy, in each post to get the name out there, as well as tags like #nuclearenergy and #cleanenergy to attract people interested in those topics. I use #share in order to encourage people to spread the message by sending my posts to friends and family, as well as educating people in person.

Snapchat Advertisements:

  • When creating a snapchat advertisement, you get to choose the location you want the ad to appear. I will be sending my ad to the campuses of large colleges around the nation. The number of locations I send it to will depend on how much money we raise, but my top schools to send the ad to are University of Colorado Boulder, University of Central Florida, Texas A&M, Ohio State University, and Arizona State University. I chose these schools because they are some of the largest schools in the country and they are spread out in different states.
  • My Snapchat advertisements will include the Nukenergy logo, as well as “Check out our website and social media pages to learn more about the benefits of nuclear energy!” and there will be links to our website, Instagram and Facebook.

YouTube Advertisements

  • These ads will be another way I target my audience. I will place ads on videos about Republican news updates, in order to make sure some of my target audience of Republicans sees them. I will also place ads on videos that are for and against nuclear energy. For nuclear energy so I can gain followers and support for my campaign, and against so I can try to convince people opposing. My ads will consist of a video going over the points I made in my posts in more detail with links to me website and social media pages (Instagram and Facebook).

Peaceful Protest

  • I want organizing a peaceful protest to be a part of my campaign because it will get a lot of attention which will help make my campaign more popular and seen by more people, as well as the main reason for the protest, which is to attract attention on the problems of coal, oil and gas, and educate more people on why nuclear energy is a great option. With millions of people seeing my protest on the news, millions of people will be exposed to my message. Main goals of protest: Let people know the hardships our planet faces due to dirty energy sources, and let people know the benefits of an increase in nuclear energy.

Website

  • This project is focusing on the social media campaign so I’m not going to go very in depth on the website; it will be called nukenergy.org and will consist of pages that go into detail on the benefits of nuclear energy and the many harms of coal, oil and natural gas.

Reaching out to Bill Gates

  • To reach out to Bill Gates, I will email the address team@gatesnotes.com and tell them about our campaign, goals and how we can work together.
  • “Mr. Gates,

I am reaching out to tell you about an amazing opportunity to increase public knowledge on the benefits of nuclear energy. Our organization is caller Nukenergy and our goals consist of increasing knowledge, getting people to share our message and educate others, as well as reach out to the Secretary of Energy or a local government official in order to urge them to not only increase the production of nuclear energy, but also decrease the use of coal, oil and natural gas. With your help, we can raise awareness and make a change. Please reach out to us for more details on how you can help save our planet.

Best,

Nukenergy

  • I would then work with him to setup the giveaway.

My Survey:

  • To try and figure out how college students feel about nuclear energy and if there is a correlation between how they feel about nuclear energy and where they are from, I created a survey and had 30 people respond to it.
  • My survey consisted of three questions. The first one being “What are your thought on nuclear energy?” the second one was “How would you feel if you found out the United States was greatly reducing its use of coal, oil and natural gas, and replacing this usage with nuclear energy?” And the third one was optional, “If you answered, “Need to know more info” or “Against it” please explain the info you would want to know/why you are against it.”

  • The locations participants were from are Colorado Springs CO, Lafayette CO, Livingston NJ, Aurora IL, Evergreen CO, Charlotte NC, Phoenix AZ, Los Angeles CA, Parker CO, Viejo CA, Fort Collins CO, Naperville IL, Bay Area CA, Los Gatos CA, Highlands Ranch CO, Castle Rock CO, Danville CA. There were multiple people at some locations. Of course, since we are at CU Boulder, there were a lot of kids from Colorado and California, so I didn’t get the widest spread, but I was able to get some different states.

  • A lot of the students answered the questions from a pro-nuclear view or neutral, so I was not able to make much of a correlation between stance on nuclear energy and where participants were from; but I was able to gauge how students, in general, feel about nuclear energy. It seems a lot of students are in favor of increasing nuclear energy or not educated on the topic enough to form an opinion. I am pretty happy with these results considering I only had one person claim to be against nuclear energy. Not many people answered the third question, but the answers I got were, “What are the environmental and economic impacts? How many jobs will be lost?” “Nuclear Power creates radiation that is in waste, which causes unhealthy levels of radiation for some humans. We are trying to decrease the pollution and costs of energy in the US, and nuclear energy does the complete opposite for both.” “Some the things I would like to know about it include: Is it safe to use? Is it harmful? Would it be cheaper to use? Whats the difference between this and solar energy? Things similar to this would be helpful to know.” “Is nuclear energy a safer alternative to coal, oil, and natural gas? If so then I would switch to that it sounds good.” And “I know that nuclear energy can provide an insane amount and power way more than other forms, but I’m just curious about like radiation and stability.”

I use some of the questions asked to guide me in what information I put in my posts.

  • Results from first two questions:

Why I think my campaign is a great idea:

  • I think my campaign will be successful because I am reaching out to some key target audiences and advertising a very important message. The more people that become educated on nuclear energy and why it is the present-day solution to global warming, the more likely a change will be made. As you read, I have many strategies to reach out to my target audience and solid points to back up my argument.

Example messages:

Short posts to keep people interested. I don’t think people will stop to read paragraphs on an Instagram or Facebook post

Post 1:

  • Hey! Welcome to Nukenergy, the non-profit organization meant to educate people on the many benefits of increasing nuclear energy use in the United States, while also decreasing use of coal, oil, and natural gas. As we post more, we encourage everyone to share our messages with your friends, educate those you know on the wonders of nuclear energy and reach out to the Secretary of Energy, Jennifer M. Granholm, or a local government official to urge them to increase nuclear energy usage. Link in our bio to donate and support our cause. Thanks! #nuclearenergy #clean #saveourplanet #share #nukenergy
  • I made this post to introduce the organization and campaign. I made my goals clear and introduced the option to financially support us through donations.

Post 2:

  • With every donation of $3 or more we will send you a sticker of our logo! #donate #foragoodcause #nuclearenergy #cleanenergy #makeachange #nukenergy #share
  • This post was created to help raise money as well as get our logo out there. To help make my campaign be successful, I want people to recognize our logo and think of the great things nuclear energy can accomplish when they see it.

Post 3:

  • Attention! We are organizing a peaceful protest to protest the use of insane amount of carbon, oil and natural gas energy production. These three are destroying our planet and a change must be made. Please join us on May 2 at 11:00am outside of the White House in Washington D.C. Tell your friends. Make signs and get your chants ready, we are going to change the world! #nuclearenergy #saveourplanet #peacefulprotest #endcoal #nukenergy #share
  • This post was created to introduce the peaceful protest, which was one of my more specific goals. I gave the location, date and time so people can start planning their attendance. Hopefully letting people know about it a couple months in advance will lead to more people attending.

Post 4:

  • Did you know nuclear power plants don’t release carbon dioxide or any pollutants into the air?! By simply reducing the amount of coal plants and replacing them with nuclear power plants, we will be taking huge steps to saving our planet and having a beautiful future for our grandchildren. Share with your friends! #share #noairpollution #nuclearenergy #nukenergy
  • This post has very important information even though it is short. The largest problem associated with coal plants is the carbon dioxide emissions, and this post articulates the fact that coal plants are harmful and that nuclear power plants are far better for the environment.

Post 5:

  • Not only is nuclear energy clean, it is also efficient! With only 58 nuclear power plants in the US, 20% of our energy comes from them; that is crazy and shows how much potential energy we are missing out on. #nukenergy #nuclearenergy #clean #cleanenergy #saveourplanet #share
  • Again, athough this post is short, it contains important information, and it touches on one of my main claims for why we should increase nuclear energy use. Nuclear energy is much more efficient than coal, oil or natural gas, and this is one of the main reasons we should make the switch.

Post 6:

  • END THE STIGMA. It is believed by millions of Americans that nuclear energy is an unsafe choice, even compared to coal! The incidents that have occurred in the past from nuclear power plants are not nearly as harmful as people believe; millions of people are killed every year from pollution that comes from coal and oil. #nukenergy #endthestigma #nuclearenergy #cleanenergy #share
  • I wanted to create this post to show how harmful coal and oil are on human health and why nuclear is safer. If some people are not concerned about the health of our planet, they may at least be concerned about the health of people. I think this argument is important because it may greatly affect many people’s opinion of coal and oil use even if the individuals aren’t worried about the natural environment.

Post 7:

  • We have teamed up with Bill Gates @thisisbillgates for a giveaway!!! With every donation of $5 you will be entered to win a Porsche Taycan! The Taycan is fully electric and a step towards a cleaner tomorrow. The link to donate is in our bio and you can be entered as many times as you donate $5. Goodluck! #nukenergy #billgates #porsche #savetheplanet #donate #electriccar #entertowin #share
  • Have Bill Gates post about us and our cause. Give us a shoutout. Advertise the giveaway
  • I have seen giveaways like this on the internet before and it seems to help whatever goal the organizations involved have, be achieved; whether that goal is to gain followers or raise money. I think a lot of people would donate $5 if they got the chance to win a luxury vehicle, and with the help of Bill Gates, a ton of people would see this and contribute. I think a lot of people would donate hundreds of dollars to enter lots of times. With all the money gained I can post a lot of advertisements on Snapchat and YouTube.

Post 8:

  • Have Nuclear Energy Institute post about us
  • Create a post for our page about them.

Check out the amazing Nuclear Energy Institute for more info on nuclear energy and        what’s new! @nuclearenergy #nukenergy #nei #nuclearenergyinstitute #cleanertomorrow #share

  • Teaming up with Nuclear Energy Institute would help gain a lot of followers, which would probably help raise a lot more money. With a similar common goal, I think they would be glad to help my campaign.

Post 9:

  • Our peaceful protest will be May 2, 2021 outside the White House. Please join us to make a change! #nukenergy #peaceful #protest #share #letschangetheworld
  • This post is a reminder of our peaceful protest, to gain more attention and rally more people. More information about the protest below.
